First Indian Ocean endovascular medical technology park opens in Mauritius

Mauritius has taken a significant step towards positioning itself as a hub for high-value manufacturing and medical technology with the inauguration of AVA Technopark at Côte d'Or Technopole. Described by the Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, as "a new industrial frontier" for the country, the first technological park in the Indian Ocean dedicated to the manufacture of endovascular medical devices reflects Mauritius' ambition to build a future-ready economy driven by innovation, precision manufacturing, exports and advanced technology.

The official inauguration ceremony, held yesterday evening, brought together the Prime Minister; the Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Anil Kumar Bachoo; the Junior Minister of Finance, Mr Dhaneshwar Damry; the Ambassador of France to Mauritius, Mr Frédéric Bontems; the President and Founder of AVA, Mr Vincent Lagarde; the Chief Executive Officer of Natec Medical Ltd, Mr Stéphane Lafèvre; and other distinguished personalities.

In his keynote address, Prime Minister Ramgoolam stressed that the inauguration represented far more than the opening of a new industrial facility. According to him, the project demonstrated that a Small Island State and an open economy could also become a productive economy. Mauritius, he added, was not only a tourist destination, a financial centre or a service economy, but also had the potential to become a country of industry, precision engineering, medical technology, innovation and exports.

The Prime Minister recalled that Natec Medical relocated its production base to Mauritius in 2000 with the objective of developing and manufacturing high-quality medical devices. Today, the company produces approximately one million catheter systems annually for the American, European and Indian markets, with products manufactured in Mauritius meeting the highest international standards.

Dr Ramgoolam further stated that Natec Medical Ltd exemplified what could be achieved through entrepreneurship, innovation, expertise and perseverance. He underlined that Mauritius would compete on the global stage not through size, but through quality, confidence, competence and excellence. AVA Technopark, he said, reflected the country's ambition to build a future-ready economy driven by innovation, production, exports and technological advancement.

He further highlighted that the project formed part of Mauritius' broader strategy to encourage productive investment, attract technology-driven industries and create opportunities for young people. He underscored the importance of developing an ecosystem bringing together companies, universities, research centres, start-ups, investors and public institutions to transform ideas into solutions, businesses and employment opportunities.

Ambassador Bontems welcomed the inauguration of AVA Technopark and recalled the importance of continued cooperation between France and Mauritius in the fields of innovation, technology and investment. He expressed confidence that the project would further strengthen economic and technological ties between the two countries.

For his part, Mr Lagarde, reaffirmed AVA's commitment to supporting the development of medical technology and innovation in Mauritius.

As for Mr Lafèvre, he spoke of the company's more than 25 years of expertise in catheter and endovascular medical device manufacturing. He also reiterated Natec Medical's commitment to producing high-quality medical devices in Mauritius for international markets while continuing to invest in innovation and technological excellence.

Overview of Natec Medical Ltd and AVA Technopark

The inauguration of AVA Technopark marks a new phase in the development of Natec Medical Ltd’s operations in Mauritius, with the company now established within this dedicated medical technology hub.

Founded in Boston in 1998, Natec Medical Ltd relocated its production base to Mauritius in 2000, where it specialises in the manufacture of balloon catheters and minimally invasive medical devices. Today, the company operates from AVA Technopark.

Located at the Côte d'Or Technopole, AVA Technopark is the first technological park in the Indian Ocean dedicated to the manufacture of endovascular medical devices. The development covers approximately 54,000 m² and comprises seven industrial buildings, of which two are already operational. The Technopark has been designed as an integrated hub for medical technology companies and incorporates sustainable features, including solar energy systems and resource-efficient infrastructure.
