Youth empowerment activity held to mark International Women’s Day
A youth empowerment activity, an initiative led by the Jeunes Ambassadeurs des Droits de l’Enfant (JADE) in collaboration with the Office of the Ombudsperson for Children, was organised on Sunday 08 March 2026 at Quatre Bornes State Secondary School in the context of the International Women’s Day celebrations. Aiming to inspire and empower young people, particularly girls to recognise their potential and pursue their aspirations with confidence, the activity brought together approximately 50 adolescents, including both boys and girls, representing JADE, Special Educational Needs (SEN) schools, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and scout groups. Through a series of interactive and creative activities, participants were encouraged to reflect on gender equality, respect for children’s rights and the importance of standing against discrimination and violence. The Ombudsperson for Children, Mrs Aneeta Ghoorah; the President of JADE, Ms Liyana Dedaur, and the Deputy Rector of Quatre Bornes SSS, Mrs Nellah Hardowar, were also present for the occasion. In her keynote address, Mrs Ghoorah highlighted the importance of respecting children’s rights and building resilience among young people. She encouraged the youth to act responsibly while upholding the principles of gender equality in their daily lives. For her part, Ms Dedaur emphasised the importance of providing equal opportunities to both girls and boys. She also noted that within JADE, the values of equality, inclusion, and mutual respect are actively promoted and encouraged among young people. The programme began with an inspirational talk delivered by artist Mrs Carol Lamport, who encouraged participants to believe in their abilities, embrace their individuality and pursue their dreams despite societal challenges. The activity also included creative exercises, role-play sessions, group discussions and interactive games aimed at raising awareness on gender equality, children’s rights and the prevention of violence against girls, while providing a platform for adolescents to share their views and aspirations.
