Strengthening responsible media reporting to address gender-based violence
The Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mrs Marie Arianne Navarre-Marie emphasised yesterday in Port Louis the crucial role of responsible reporting in addressing gender-based violence, highlighting the need for journalists to ensure their coverage raises awareness, supports prevention, and helps protect women and girls.
She was speaking during a workshop organised by the Media Trust in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Welfare as part of events marking International Women’s Day 2026, which will be observed on Sunday 8 March under the theme “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls.”
The workshop brought together media professionals to reflect on ethical and responsible reporting practices when covering cases of gender-based violence. Certificates were also awarded to participants who successfully completed the one-day training session.
Addressing participants, the Minister emphasised that gender-based violence remains a serious societal issue affecting many Mauritian families and, in some cases, leading to tragic consequences. She called for a collective and coordinated approach involving governmental institutions, civil society, law enforcement authorities, and the media to effectively tackle the issue.
Highlighting the importance of ethical journalism, the Minister stressed that reporters must safeguard the dignity and privacy of victims and their families while avoiding harmful narratives.
According to her, responsible media coverage can serve as a powerful tool in raising awareness and preventing gender-based violence by informing the public about available support services and encouraging victims to seek help before situations escalate.
Reaffirming Government’s commitment to addressing gender-based violence, Minister Navarre-Marie called on journalists to uphold professional ethics and responsibility in their reporting.
