PM Ramgoolam and Church Leaders discuss Social Care Projects for Rodrigues

The Vicar Apostolic of Rodrigues, Mgr. Michel Moura, and the Bishop of the Diocese of Port Louis, Mgr. Jean Michaël Durhône, called on the Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, today at the New Treasury Building in Port Louis. The meeting was an opportunity to discuss issues of social importance, especially the welfare of the elderly and vulnerable groups in Rodrigues.

The meeting also marked the first official encounter between the Prime Minister and Mgr. Michel Moura since his episcopal ordination in March 2024.

In a statement, Mgr. Durhône indicated that discussions focussed on the growing challenges associated with an ageing population, a matter that remains a priority for both the Church and the Government. In this context, he recalled the forthcoming celebration of the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, to be observed later this month, and underscored the need for continued support and care for senior citizens.

For his part, Mgr. Moura presented a project aiming to set-up the first permanent residential care home for the elderly in Rodrigues. He explained that while a respite care facility currently exists on the island, there is no long-term residential structure for elderly persons who can no longer be adequately cared for at home.

According to him, demographic changes, evolving family structures and the increasing needs of vulnerable persons have highlighted the urgency of creating such a facility in Rodrigues. He underlined that the proposed permanent residential care home will provide appropriate care and support to elderly persons, particularly those who are most vulnerable.

The Vicar Apostolic also outlined a complementary project for the establishment of a respite care unit dedicated to children and young persons with autism and disabilities. He pointed out that Rodrigues currently lacks specialised facilities to cater for these groups and emphasised the importance of ensuring that no vulnerable member of society is left behind.

Mgr. Moura moreover remarked that Prime Minister Ramgoolam was attentive to the proposals and showed keen interest in these projects, which seek to strengthen social support services and improve the quality of life of vulnerable people in Rodrigues.
