Government revises compensation for affected potato growers
The compensation payable to 64 potato growers who sustained losses due to poor-quality seedlings has been revised from Rs 50,000 to Rs 85,000 per arpent. The Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, Dr Arvin Boolell, announced the revised compensation yesterday following a meeting held at the headquarters of the Agricultural Marketing Board (AMB) in Moka.
The meeting was attended by the Minister of Financial Services and Economic Planning, Dr (Mrs) Jyoti Jeetun; the Junior Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, Mr Gilles Fabrice David; the Junior Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Hambyrajen Narsinghen; Members of Parliament; representatives of the AMB and the Food and Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (FAREI) as well as the affected potato growers.
Minister Boolell acknowledged the significant losses sustained by the affected growers and reaffirmed Government's commitment to providing appropriate support while safeguarding the interests of the farming community and ensuring the sustainability of local potato production.
He further indicated that, following reports of crop failure, the FAREI carried out investigations into the matter. In addition, the AMB reimbursed the cost of the seed potatoes supplied to the affected growers, he added.
