Prize-giving ceremony celebrates academic success of Chagossian students

Twelve students from the Chagossian community who distinguished themselves in the Primary School Achievement Certificate (PSAC), National Certificate of Education (NCE), School Certificate (SC), and Higher School Certificate (HSC) examinations were recognised for their academic performance during a prize giving ceremony held on Saturday 4 July 2026 at the Marie Charlesia Alexis Chagossian Community Centre in Baie du Tombeau.

The event, organised by the Chagossian Welfare Fund, also saw a polytechnic student and a university student receive financial assistance to support their tertiary studies. The initiative aims to reward academic excellence and encourage students of the Chagossian community to pursue higher education through the award of cash prizes.

Speaking on the occasion, the President of the Chagossian Welfare Fund Board, Mr Olivier Bancoult, congratulated the award recipients on their academic success and commended parents and teachers for their unwavering commitment to the students' educational development.

He reiterated that education remains a key priority for the Fund, stressing the importance of equipping young people with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in an evolving world.

Mr Bancoult noted that more than 30 students from the Chagossian community have already benefited from the Fund's tertiary education grants. He encouraged students to continue their studies beyond the Higher School Certificate and reaffirmed the Fund's commitment to expanding educational opportunities, protecting the rights of Chagossian children, and supporting them in achieving their aspirations.

Students who excelled at the PSAC, NCE, SC and HSC examinations each received a cash prize of Rs 8,000, while those pursuing tertiary education were awarded Rs 12,000.
