PM discusses digital collaboration with Orange Middle East Africa CEO
Telecommunications, digital transformation, connectivity and emerging technologies were at the centre of discussions yesterday evening as the Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, received the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Orange Middle East Africa (MEA), Mr Yasser Shaker, during a courtesy call at the New Treasury Building in Port Louis.
Mr Shaker was accompanied by the Chairman of Mauritius Telecom, Mr Sarat Lallah, and the CEO of Mauritius Telecom, Mr Veemal Gungadin.
In a statement following the meeting, Mr Shaker said he was honoured to visit Mauritius for the first time and was impressed by the country's talent pool and the opportunities it offers.
He indicated that discussions focused on Orange's plans to support Mauritius in advancing its digital transformation agenda, particularly in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), information security and enhanced connectivity. The meeting also explored opportunities to strengthen collaboration with Africa by leveraging Orange's extensive regional footprint.
The MEA CEO further highlighted that Orange operates in 18 countries across the Middle East and Africa, generating revenues of more than US$10 billion, serving close to 50 million Orange Money users and over 20 million users of its super applications.
Referring to the rapid evolution of AI, Mr Shaker emphasised that the technology requires scale to unlock its full potential. According to him, the exchange with the Prime Minister explored ways in which Orange could support Mauritius in strengthening its Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities while leveraging the country's highly skilled workforce. He noted that such collaboration would foster a mutually beneficial partnership, creating value for both Mauritius and Orange.
