The Minister of Education and Human Resource, Dr Mahend Gungapersad, raised the alarm over bullying in schools, stressing the importance of instilling the right values and principles in children from an early age. He was speaking at a ceremony held in L’Avenir in St Pierre to mark the 75th Anniversary of the Mohunlall Mohit Government School.
Also present at the event were the Junior Minister of Finance, Mr Dhaneshwar Damry; the Deputy Chief Whip, Mr Govinden Pynivel Venkatasami; and the Headmistress of the Mohunlall Mohit Government School, Mrs Anjeeni Devi Peruman.

In his address, Minister Gungapersad stated that bullying and harassment in schools remain a serious concern and urged school staff to take firm action whenever such incidents occur. He emphasised that bullying often begins at home, making it essential for families to play a positive role in shaping children's behaviour.
He highlighted that education, good manners, principles, and values are the foundation upon which a strong and harmonious society is built. He further stressed the importance of inculcating the right values in children from an early age so that they grow into respectful and responsible citizens.
The Minister also underlined that parents and schools must work hand in hand to provide children with the guidance, support, and moral education they need. “Through close collaboration, families and educators can create a safe, caring, and inclusive school environment where every child feels respected and protected from bullying,” he indicated.
The Junior Minister, for his part, underscored the importance of providing a conducive environment and proper guidance to support students' education. He stressed that success in life is built on values of effort, hard work, and dedication, which enable individuals to lead a decent and fulfilling life.
He also reaffirmed Government's commitment to supporting both students and parents. He emphasised the need to preserve the country's strong culture of education while continuously improving opportunities to ensure that every child has access to quality learning and a brighter future.
