Reconstructed Takamaka Bridge in Vacoas opens to traffic

The newly reconstructed Takamaka Bridge on John Kennedy Avenue in Vacoas was inaugurated, this morning, by the Minister of National Infrastructure, Mr Govindranath Gunness, in the presence of the Minister of Financial Services and Economic Planning, Dr Jyoti Jeetun, the Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Mahendra Gondeea, and other personalities and stakeholders.

In a statement, Minister Gunness highlighted that the reconstruction works started on 18 February 2026 and were completed ahead of schedule, before the initial deadline of end July 2026. He recalled that the project, initially planned in 2022 at an estimated cost of Rs 21.7 million, had remained pending for several years and was expected to take seven months to complete. Government, he noted, reinitiated the project at the same cost with a revised completion timeframe of five months, expressing satisfaction that the works were finalised before 31 July. The bridge is now officially open and accessible to motorists.

The Minister further pointed out that the reconstruction was undertaken in line with recommendations of the Land Drainage Authority and forms part of the wider Land Drainage Master Plan. The project, he emphasised, is intended to improve public safety by reducing the risks posed by flooding and protecting lives and property. He also indicated that Government is putting in place the necessary measures to compensate businesses that suffered losses during the construction period.

For their part, Dr Jeetun and Mr Gondeea welcomed the timely completion of the project, noting that the upgraded bridge will enhance mobility and improve the daily commute of residents and road users. They also expressed their appreciation to the public for their patience, cooperation and understanding throughout the construction works.
