Some forty-six graduates of the Women Leadership Academy (WLA), an initiative of the Mauritius Institute of Directors (MloD), were awarded certificates this morning, during a ceremony held in Réduit.

The graduation ceremony was organised in context of MloD’s ongoing International Women's Day campaign under the theme ‘Give to Gain’. The event was attended by the Minister of Financial Services and Economic Planning, Dr (Mrs) Jyoti Jeetun and the Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mrs Marie Arianne Navarre-Marie.

In her address, Dr Jyoti Jeetun lauded MloD’s initiative, which she said is poised to equip women in their leadership journey with essential tools and skills as well as develop their self-confidence to assert themselves. She dwelt on the remarkable journey of the Nation and Mauritian women since Mauritius achieved independence, emphasising that the country now needs to redefine its future, reinvent its declining sectors, move up the value chain and pivot to new economic sectors.

The Minister underpinned the elaboration of Vision 2050 as a key enabler to steer Mauritius towards the Nation’s new and underlined that gender is a cross-cutting theme. She recalled that with increasing women participation in the labour market, alleviating their constraints to enter the workforce and encouraging more female representation in the political sphere as well as at management level remain key concerns.

On her part, Minister Marie Arianne Navarre-Marie highlighted that the WLA complements Government’s efforts in further promoting gender equality in leadership by equipping women with the confidence, skills and the mindset needed for them to seize every opportunity and create new ones.

Besides, the Minister renewed her commitment to strengthen the foundations that allow women to thrive, recalling that the Ministry places strong emphasis on prioritising respectful and harassment-free workplaces, encouraging women’s entry and progression in the labour market, supporting economic independence, advocating for more balanced family responsibilities.

On her part, the Chief Executive Officer of the MloD, Mrs Sheila Ujoodha, indicated that since its launch in 2021, the WLA has empowered over 300 women as well as leaders in Mauritius and Kenya. This has proved to be a transformative experience for them, as well as determining in positively shifting the course of their careers.

She reiterated MloD’s endeavour to continue to play its role in shaping the future leaders of tomorrow and contribute to an inclusive corporate governance ecosystem.
