Mauritius to co-host global workshop on combating illegal waste trafficking
Mauritius will strengthen its role in global environmental enforcement efforts by co-hosting the Mid-term Evaluation Meeting workshop for Operation DEMETER XII from 06 to 08 July 2026. The event will be organised by the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) and will focus on addressing the illegal trans-boundary movement of waste regulated under the Basel Convention.
The workshop will bring together international partners to assess the progress and effectiveness of Operation DEMETER XII, a global enforcement initiative led by the World Customs Organization in partnership with the Basel Convention and the United Nations Environment Programme. The initiative targets the illicit cross-border movement of hazardous waste and environmentally sensitive chemicals, with the aim of strengthening global compliance and enforcement.
Key areas of focus will include the review of operational outcomes, identification of challenges, and the strengthening of cooperation among participating administrations to better combat environmental crime linked to illegal waste trafficking.
Cabinet has also taken note that the MRA will co-host the Capacity Building for Tax Inspectors Without Borders on Criminal Tax Investigation from 20 to 24 July 2026. The training will review the activities and performance of the Regional Intelligence Liaison Office East and Southern Africa, assess Member administrations’ progress in combating illicit trade and transnational customs offences and promote regional cooperation and coordinated enforcement actions among Customs administrations.
