Government recognises the contribution of seafarers to world trade and global economy

Out of a total of 201 Mauritian seafarers, 44 are currently active, while 157 retired seafarers are now receiving a monthly income support of Rs 2,500 under a Government initiative aimed at recognising their long-standing contribution to the maritime sector and the national economy.

This statement was made by the Junior Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, Mr Gilles Fabrice David, at an official ceremony held this morning at Trevessa House in Mer Rouge to commemorate the Day of the Seafarer 2026, observed globally on 25 June. The event was organised by the Seafarers’ Welfare Fund (SWF) under the theme, ‘Carrying world trade. Carrying the risks.’

The Lord Mayor of Port Louis, Ms Christelle Pondard; the Chairman of the SWF, Mr Jaques Patrick Bouquet; the Port Chaplain, Father Jacques-Henri David; and other personalities were also present.

Speaking on the occasion, Junior Minister David highlighted the vital role played by seafarers in sustaining global trade and economic development. He noted that approximately two million seafarers navigate thousands of vessels across the world's oceans, and account for around 80 per cent of international trade.

He underlined that most of the goods used and consumed worldwide are transported by sea, underpinning the pivotal contribution of seafarers to the global economy. According to the Junior Minister, seafarers not only carry world trade but also significant dangers in the line of duty.

Mr David observed that these risks have intensified amid ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, with seafarers often finding themselves in geopolitical hotspots due to the nature of their profession.

For his part, the Chairman of the SWF stated that the Day of the Seafarer serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to support those working at sea and to ensure that their contribution is properly acknowledged. He underscored the importance of continued efforts to strengthen welfare initiatives and improve coordination among stakeholders in the maritime field.

Mr Bouquet moreover reaffirmed the commitment of the SWF to work closely with partners to enhance assistance provided to seafarers, particularly in addressing practical challenges faced by those in the profession and their families.
