In the wake of Government’s recent decision regarding the impoundment of vehicles and immediate suspension of driving licences in cases of driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol, the Minister of Land Transport, Mr Osman Mahomed, chaired a meeting, this afternoon, in Port Louis. The objective was to chart across the way forward with a policy paper to be submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers on the basis of which legislation will be drafted.

Representatives of the Prime Minister’s Office, the Mauritius Police Force, the State Law Office, the National Land Transport Authority, the National Road Safety Council and the Traffic Management and Road Safety Unit attended the meeting.

In his address, the Minister pointed out that Government considers road safety as a top priority, thus the decision to come forward with stringent measures. The objective he explained, is to further reinforce road safety.

He moreover recalled that the Penalty Points System (PPS) was reintroduced on 31st January 2026 as part of a renewed effort to tackle reckless driving, reduce fatalities, and promote responsible driving habits. As at 24 February 2026, 385 offenders booked, have already paid their fines and allocated points under the PPS.

According to Mr Osman Mahomed, in addition to reinforcing road safety, the seizure of vehicles and suspension of driving licenses, depending on the cases, will also act as a strong deterrent to drugs and alcohol consumption among drivers and motorcyclists.
