Construction sector stakeholders discuss revised National Schedule of Rates
A validation workshop on the updated National Schedule of Rates (NSR) opened, this morning in Port Louis, in the presence of the Minister of National Infrastructure, Mr Govindranath Gunness. The session aims to present the revised document to construction stakeholders and secure broad industry consensus ahead of its finalisation and publication.
Minister Gunness highlighted the NSR as a key instrument for ensuring transparency, pricing consistency and fairness across the construction industry. He called on professionals in construction works and services to actively contribute to discussions, identify gaps and inconsistencies, and help ensure the document is comprehensive, practical and reflective of current realities.
Emphasising the sector’s strategic importance, the Minister noted that construction industry has consistently contributed between 5% and 7% to Mauritius’ Gross Domestic Product in recent years. He reaffirmed that as the country advances towards Vision 2050, the sector will remain central to the national transformation agenda. In this regard, he stressed the need to enhance productivity, build technical capacity, strengthen compliance and standards, support SMEs within the value chain, and promote innovation and digital tools such as Building Information Modelling.
The Minister also commended the Construction Industry Authority (CIA) for strengthening governance within the sector while indicating that since January 2026, new regulations have been introduced in a bid to transform the grading of contractors from a 4-tier classification to a new 8-Grades alphabetical system providing a fairer and just categorisation of contractors.
For their part, the Chairman of the CIA, Mr Avinash Shree Mojee, and the Officer-in-Charge, Mr Trilock Bhunjun, outlined ongoing initiatives aimed at aligning Mauritius with international best practices to foster a sustainable, efficient and resilient construction industry.
The B5 Project Consultants Ltd was appointed to update the Schedule of Rates following consultations and technical assistance.
The First Edition of the NSR was introduced in 2012 and comprised approximately 1,650 items. In March 2021, a significantly expanded Second Edition covering some 5,900 items was published.
