Mauritius celebrates a new Centenarian, Mrs Pabitree Bissessur

Mrs Pabitree Bissessur celebrated her 100th birthday during an official ceremony held on 14 June 2026 in Triolet.

Organised by the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity, the ceremony was attended by the Minister of Local Government, Mr Ranjiv Woochit; the Member of Parliament, Mr Kaviraj Rookny; the Vice-Chairperson of the District Council of Pamplemousses, Mr Brian Ng Fuk Chong; along with representatives of the Senior Citizens Council, family members and friends.

On the occasion, Mrs Bissessur was honoured with a bouquet, a centenarian medal and a certificate, along with a cheque of Rs 26,203 from the Ministry. She also received household and utility gifts including an air fryer and a set of kitchen utensils, while the Senior Citizens Council offered a commemorative package comprising a shield, bath towel, hand towel and birthday card. In addition, the National Solidarity Fund presented a cheque of Rs 10,000 and Mauritius Telecom provided a special handsfree telephone service.

Born on 10 June 1926 in Belle Vue Pilot, Mrs Bissessur was the daughter of the late Mr Jeetun Seewoochurun, formerly a labourer at Belle Vue Harel Sugar Estate and Mrs Gunessee Sundari, a housewife. She grew up in a family of four children and is now the only surviving member of her siblings.

She married Mr Seerkissoon Bissessur in 1954 and the couple was engaged in cattle rearing and agricultural work. She later continued farming activities and livestock rearing throughout her life. The couple had seven children, of whom three are still alive. She is also the proud grandmother of 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

The centenarian enjoys a simple lifestyle and is fond of non-vegetarian meals, particularly fish briani, chicken fried rice as well as chicken and fish curries. She also enjoys watching television. She attributes her longevity to a life of hard work, discipline, and simplicity, especially through her years in agriculture and livestock rearing.
