Empowerment programme highlights well-being and professional development of headmasters

The well-being of school administrators and their continuous professional development were at the heart of an empowerment programme held today at the Coral Azur Beach Resort, Mont Choisy. The Minister of Education and Human Resource, Dr Mahend Gungapersad, was present at the opening ceremony.

The Acting Director of Directorate Zone 1, Mrs S. Mahadowa-Reechaye; the Acting Director (Primary Education, Curriculum Development and Evaluation), Dr J. N Genevieve; and over 100 headmasters, were among the attendees.

Opening the session, Minister Gungapersad paid tribute to the vital role of school leaders, noting that the education system rests on their shoulders. He emphasised that their dedication and leadership is instrumental in thriving the education system.

He further stressed the importance of self-management, reminding that one must first learn to manage oneself before managing a school. He underlined the relevance of the session on managing stress and burnout, noting that leading a primary school is no easy task, particularly when schools cater for between 800 and 1,000 students.

The Minister acknowledged the numerous challenges faced by headmasters, including financial constraints, social issues such as drug abuse and juvenile pregnancy, and other complex situations that require careful navigation. In this context, he highlighted the importance of mental health and well-being for school leaders.

He encouraged the holding of more sessions focusing on wellness and personal development for headmasters, while commending their daily commitment to the education system and their efforts in shaping future generations.

Referring to the ongoing preparation of the Blueprint for the education sector, Minister Gungapersad underscored the importance of adapting the document to address emerging challenges and developments in education. He noted that the envisaged reforms are intended to enhance learning outcomes, benefit children and equip them to become the ambassadors of tomorrow.
