Awareness Talk and Yoga Session Commemorate International Yoga Day at State House
The High Commission of India in Mauritius organised an awareness talk and a special yoga session today at the State House, in Réduit, as part of activities marking the 12th edition of the International Day of Yoga. Held under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” the event aimed to promote the role of yoga in enhancing physical health, mental well-being and harmony among individuals and communities.
The President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Dharambeer Gokhool, the High Commissioner of India to Mauritius, Mr Anurag Srivastava, and the Deputy High Commissioner of India, Mrs Aparna Ganesan, were present on the occasion.
In his keynote address, President Gokhool underscored the importance of yoga in personal, professional and family life, describing it as a global phenomenon that continues to unite people across cultures and generations. Referring to the 2026 theme, he noted that it is particularly relevant as it highlights the importance of yoga for people of all ages.
Diseases affect all segments of society, irrespective of age, recalled the President, while emphasising the significant role that yoga can play in promoting healthy ageing by helping individuals maintain their physical abilities, independence and active participation in society.
President Gokhool also expressed the wish to implement a national yoga programme for the benefit of the Mauritian population. He further announced that the official celebrations marking the 2026 International Day of Yoga will be held at Côte d’Or National Sports Complex on Sunday 21 June and invited the public to participate in the event.
For his part, High Commissioner Srivastava highlighted the importance of yoga in promoting health and well-being. He noted that the International Day of Yoga is celebrated across the world, conveying the message that yoga belongs to everyone and transcends language, culture and borders. He added that this year’s theme is especially pertinent as it promotes healthy ageing and encourages individuals to adopt healthier lifestyles.
The High Commissioner also underscored the deep-rooted relationship between India and Mauritius, founded on shared cultural, linguistic and historical ties. He noted that cooperation between the two countries is expanding into new areas, including traditional medicine and yoga. He further encouraged Mauritians to take part in a historic global online yoga session to be organised by India’s Ministry of Ayush on Sunday 14 June 2026, in an effort to establish a Guinness World Record.
