Youth encouraged to learn new sustainable and smart agriculture techniques

Government urges the youth to learn and implement sustainable, enjoyable and smart agriculture techniques, as is the case for Zardin La Laura Ltd, so as to become entrepreneurs and develop their own agribusiness.

The Minister of Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, Dr Arvin Boolell, made this statement today following a site visit at Zardin La Laura Ltd in La Laura, St Pierre. The aim of the visit was to take cognisance and witness the innovative techniques used by this family business in a bid to promote smart agriculture.

The Junior Minister, Mr Fabrice David; the Chief Executive of the Food and Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (FAREI), Dr Madhvee Madhou; as well as other personalities were also present during the visit.

Minister Boolell highlighted that Zardin La Laura Ltd has evolved from a simple hydroponic greenhouse into a modern, technologically driven agribusiness with the technical support of FAREI. He emphasised the need to adapt quickly to new technologies, such as the Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence, which are essential so as to be able to implement precision agriculture and farming.

Referring to the family business as a success story, Dr Boolell informed that the enterprise meets sanitary and phytosanitary standards while offering healthy and quality products. He added that discussions are underway with the Minister of Energy and Public Utilities to provide additional support to businesses wishing to embark on this type of project.

For his part, Junior Minister David described Zardin La Laura Ltd as a model for the agriculture of the future. Sustainable agriculture, he stated, takes into account profitability and productivity, as well as environmental protection and human health, all within a technology-controlled environment.

For her part, Dr Madhou outlined that FAREI is currently reviewing, modernising and adapting its research programmes to support this new form of agriculture. She further stressed the need to introduce new technologies into the sector.

One of the owners of Zardin La Laura Ltd, Mr Danny Chan Hong Long, provided details on the company’s journey since its creation five years ago and challenges faced so far. He also appealed to Government to provide adequate support and facilities to businesses wishing to develop this type of agriculture.
