Comprehensive guidelines under preparation for Ganga Talao Sanctuary
The
Ministry of Arts and Culture is currently working in collaboration with the
National Heritage Fund to come up with the first comprehensive guidelines for
the management and preservation of Ganga Talao Spiritual Sanctuary. Recognised
as one of Mauritius’ most sacred sites, Ganga Talao is considered as a national
heritage site since 2023.
In this context, a site visit was conducted by the Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Mahendra Gondeea and the Junior Minister, Mrs Marie Veronique Leu-Govind, this morning at Grand Bassin.
In a statement, Minister Gondeea indicated that the visit focused on identifying sensitive areas within the sanctuary, reviewing site regulations, and assessing measures to safeguard its spiritual significance, cultural heritage and environmental integrity. The initiative, he noted, follows growing public concerns regarding activities taking place within the sanctuary and reflects Government's commitment to ensuring that the site continues to be respected by worshippers, visitors and future generations.
He further highlighted that several consultations have already been held with stakeholders and religious organisations regarding the proper management of the sanctuary. The visit also aimed to verify whether temple leases comply with existing regulations. He reiterated that only registered priests are authorised to conduct religious ceremonies and prayers at the site.
Minister Gondeea also stressed the importance of reinforcing the code of conduct for tourists and underscored the need for collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism to better inform visitors about the norms and practices that must be observed in places of worship.
Furthermore, he announced that a dedicated trust fund will be established under the aegis of the Prime Minister’s Office to oversee the management of Ganga Talao and enhance transparency in its administration. The possibility of introducing checkpoints at the sanctuary is also being examined, particularly in relation to the protection and management of religious sites.
For her part, Junior Minister Leu-Govind appealed to both local residents and tourists to respect the sanctuary’s code of conduct. She also emphasised the importance of engaging tour operators and relevant Ministries in discussions aimed at launching awareness and sensitisation campaigns to promote respectful behaviour at the sacred site.
