Centenary milestone for Mrs Marie Thérèse Marcelle Bowen

To celebrate the 100th birthday of Mrs Marie Thérèse Marcelle Bowen, the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity organised, on Sunday 7 June 2026, an official function in the presence of the Centenarian’s family and friends at Maison Savoir in Cité La Cure. The Minister of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity, Mr Ashok Kumar Subron; the Member of Parliament, Mr Louis Ludovic Michel Caserne; and the Lord Mayor of Port Louis, Ms Christelle Pondard; were also present.

As a tribute to Mrs Bowen, the Ministry offered her a cheque of Rs 26,203, a stand-fan, a bouquet of flower, the Centenarian medal, and a Certificate. Moreover, the National Solidarity Fund of the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity remitted a cheque of Rs 10,000 to the new Centenarian while the Senior Citizen Council presented her with gifts. Mauritius Telecom provided her with a special telephone service.

It is to be noted that beside the basic retirement pension of Rs 23,550, the Ministry provides several monthly benefits to Mrs Bowen, including a Carer’s Allowance of Rs 3,500, a Social Retirement Benefit of Rs 2,500, and Domiciliary Visits by a Doctor.

Mrs Marie Thérèse Marcelle Bowen, born on 2 June 1926 in Bois des Amourettes was raised in a family of two children. She is the only surviving member. Her parents passed away long back, and her elder sister died at the age of 94.

Mrs Bowen attended school up to Standard VI. In April 1951, she married Mr Elias Maxi Bowen, a mechanic, at Medine Sugar Estate, with whom she had three daughters and a son. Mrs Bowen has fourteen grandchildren.

The Centenarian attributes her longevity to her hard work, support and care of loved ones, and unconditional faith in God.
