Strengthening cancer care in Mauritius through international collaboration
As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen specialised cancer care services and foster collaboration between international experts and local healthcare professionals, an Onco-Surgeon from Fortis Hospital, India, Dr Vinay Gaikwad, recently undertook a five-day official mission to Mauritius.
In this context, the Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Anil Kumar Bachoo, met with Dr Gaikwad on Friday at the National Cancer Centre (NCC) in Phoenix to discuss avenues for enhanced cooperation, knowledge exchange and capacity building in the field of oncology.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister Bachoo highlighted the positive outcomes of the mission, noting that Dr Gaikwad had consulted more than 30 patients and planned some 10 complex cancer surgeries.
He reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to improving access to advanced cancer treatment for Mauritian patients. He underscored the importance of visits by specialists from India and other partner countries in facilitating knowledge transfer, skills development and capacity building among local medical teams through collaboration with internationally renowned experts.
Such partnerships, Mr Bachoo emphasised, reflect Government’s continued commitment to strengthening cancer care services and ensuring that patients can benefit from high-quality, specialised treatment closer to home, thereby reducing the need to seek medical care abroad.
For his part, Dr Gaikwad expressed his enthusiasm for working alongside Mauritian doctors and sharing his expertise. He also conveyed his appreciation for the dedication, professionalism and support of the National Cancer Centre personnel, and expressed his interest in pursuing further collaboration in the future.
