Minister Bachoo salutes Professor D’Cruz continued collaboration in specialised healthcare in Mauritius
The Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Anil Kumar Bachoo, met yesterday at the ENT Hospital in Vacoas, the Director of Hospital and Chief of Paediatric Surgery department at Narayana Health in Bangalore, Professor Ashley Lucien Joseph D’Cruz. This marks Professor D’Cruz’s 13th visit to Mauritius.
Professor D’Cruz is a highly respected and senior surgeon from India. He previously served as President of the College of Paediatric Surgeons of India and is a pioneer of liver transplantation in children. He is also an experienced kidney transplant surgeon for both paediatric and adult patients.
In a statement, Minister Bachoo expressed his deep appreciation and gratitude to Professor D’Cruz for his sustained and invaluable contribution to the Mauritian health sector over the years. He recalled that Professor D’Cruz has been visiting Mauritius since 2016 and has performed surgical interventions on more than 200 children. He added that his visits also provide the opportunity to Mauritian healthcare professionals to strengthen their competencies and expertise.
Minister Bachoo welcomed Professor D’Cruz’s continued collaboration in upgrading the national healthcare system through the introduction of high-technology and specialised medical services. He further announced that bone marrow transplantation is expected to be introduced in Mauritius later this year, with the support of Professor D’Cruz.
Professor D’Cruz, for his part, underscored the importance of adopting robotic surgery within the healthcare system to facilitate complex procedures such as kidney and liver transplantation, as well as bone marrow transplantation locally.
According to him, the existing infrastructure and medical equipment at the New ENT Hospital are well suited for advanced surgical procedures and can be fully leveraged. Professor D’Cruz reaffirmed his commitment to providing technical assistance in this regard.
During his current visit, Professor D’Cruz has undertaken more complex surgical cases. To date, he has examined 25 patients and operated on five cases. Among these, two were oesophageal replacement surgeries, each lasting approximately six hours. Both children are currently recovering well in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit.
