Minister Bachoo meets specialists of KIMS Hospital to strengthen specialised healthcare services

The Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Anil Kumar Bachoo, met visiting specialists from KIMS Hospitals India, namely the Consultant Vascular Surgeon, Dr Vinit Paliwal, and the Director of Robotic Urology and Renal Transplant, Dr Samit Chaturvedi, this morning, at the SAJ Hospital in Flacq.

Also present were Members of the National Assembly, Mr Raviraj Sinha Beechook, and Mr Chandraprakash Ramkalawon.

The specialists are currently in Mauritius performing specialised surgeries and collaborating with local medical teams. Their visit follows recent discussions between the Ministry of Health and Wellness and senior representatives of KIMS Hospitals aimed at strengthening collaboration in specialist training, capacity building and advanced surgical services.

In a statement, Minister Bachoo underscored the importance of the mission, noting that there is presently no vascular surgeon within the public health sector. The visit, he said, will enable patients suffering from complex vascular conditions to benefit from highly specialised treatment locally and contribute to the transfer of expertise and skills to Mauritian healthcare professionals.

He expressed gratitude to the Government of India for their continued support in the healthcare sector highlighting Mauritius’ reliance on India for specialised and advanced medical services. He also appealed for assistance in reducing the waiting list for open-heart surgeries, which currently comprises around 200 patients, stressing the need for timely intervention.

Referring to the backlog of patients awaiting ophthalmological surgeries, Minister Bachoo requested support from KIMS Hospitals in providing additional specialists to help address these cases and alleviate patients’ suffering.

For his part, Dr Chaturvedi stated that Mauritius possesses modern healthcare infrastructure and is well-positioned to deliver quality medical services. He emphasised the importance of training more local doctors to further strengthen the healthcare system.

Referring to vascular health challenges, Dr Chaturvedi noted that approximately 700 amputations are performed annually in Mauritius, underscoring the need for early diagnosis and prompt treatment. He indicated that arrangements could be explored to station a vascular surgeon in Mauritius to assist with complex surgical cases.

Dr Chaturvedi further announced that a first batch of doctors from KIMS Hospitals is expected to arrive in Mauritius on 17 June to support ongoing healthcare initiatives and collaboration with local medical professionals.
