Redefining the future of human capital development in Mauritius

A high-level conference focusing on the theme, “Shaping the Future of the Capacity Building Sector in Mauritius”, organised by the Association of Registered Private Training Institutions (ARPTI), was launched this morning by the Minister of Tertiary Education, Science and Research, Dr Kaviraj Sharma Sukon, at Royal Green in Moka.

The Junior Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Hambyrajen Narsinghen, and the President of the ARPTI, Mr Jai Lallbeharry, were also in attendance.

The event brought together key stakeholders from the education, training and workforce development sectors to discuss the future of skills transformation, innovation and human capital development in Mauritius. The conference featured interventions from major institutions and industry representatives, including Government officials and sector experts.

In his keynote address, Dr Kaviraj Sharma Sukon highlighted the significant number of jobs expected to disappear by 2030, noting that many current skills will also become obsolete. However, he reassured that the Government aims to foster a thriving environment for the capacity building sector, ensuring that the workforce is well-prepared for the jobs of the future.

The Minister stressed that capacity building is the cornerstone of this transformation, recalling that the role of institutions such as the ARPTI is to equip every individual to contribute to national development using modern tools in evolving work environments.

Additionally, Dr Sukon underlined Government’s goal of establishing Mauritius as a knowledge hub, outlining key initiatives taken in this context, namely: amending the Higher Education Act to streamline programme accreditation and introduce micro-credentials; transitioning from programme-based to institutional accreditation; implementing a new credit system to facilitate student mobility; and establishing a Mauritius Quality Code for higher education.

A number of agreements with international institutions to accelerate programme accreditation has been signed with the aim of attracting more international students and strengthen Mauritius as a regional educational hub, the Minister indicated. The authorities are working to streamline visa and accommodation processes, he further added.

Moreover, the Ministry will act against unethical business practices and unscrupulous agents, said Dr Sukon, announcing the elaboration of a Regulation to ensure that all agents bringing students to Mauritius should be a holder a valid, official license.
