Dr Mohabeer Jeelall Sonah celebrates a life marked by service, compassion and resilience

A special ceremony was held, yesterday, at the residence of Dr Mohabeer Jeelall Sonah in Vacoas, to mark his 100th birthday in the presence of family members, relatives, carers and representatives of the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity. The Mayor of the Municipal Council of Vacoas-Phoenix, Mr Abdul Hussain Abdool Khader, was also present.

To honour the centenarian, the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity presented Dr Sonah with a bouquet; a centenarian medal; a certificate; a cheque of Rs 26,203; and a decorative fireplace. He also received a cheque of Rs 10,000 from the National Solidarity Fund and gifts from the Senior Citizens Council.

The centenarian’s father was a businessman and his mother a housewife. However, he lost his father when he was only two years old and his sister was seven months old. Dr Sonah, his mother and sister were thus taken care of by his grandfather, Mr Jeean Mohabeer Sonah, a well-known businessman in Port Louis. Dr Sonah was very close to his grandfather and loved him very much. His only sister has already passed away.

Dr Sonah pursued his primary education at Aryan Vedic Government School before attending the Royal College of Curepipe, where he completed his Higher School Certificate. He later pursued his medical studies in Paris. Following his specialisation in Ear, Nose and Throat medicine, he returned to Mauritius and served in the public health sector while residing with his grandfather.

While studying in France, Dr Sonah met Miss Monlon Francoise Paule Andree, whom he later married. Upon settling in Mauritius, Mrs Sonah became actively involved in the education sector and managed Curepipe College until her retirement in 2014. The institution was founded on 16 January 1962 by Dr Sonah’s grandfather, Mr Jeean Mohabeer Sonah.

Although the couple did not have children, Dr Sonah remained surrounded by the affection and support of close family members and carers. Throughout his life, Dr Sonah contributed significantly to social causes, especially in helping children in need to access education. Those close to him describe him as a kind, pleasant and caring person who is deeply respected and loved by all who know him.

Dr Sonah enjoys gardening, reading and listening to music, particularly opera. While he previously consumed both vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals, he now follows a vegetarian diet due to health considerations. Despite his advanced age, he continues to enjoy relatively good health, although he experiences hearing impairment and moves around with the aid of a walking frame.

Speaking about the secret to his longevity, Dr Sonah attributes it to a healthy lifestyle, strong faith in God and the constant care and support provided by his family members.
