National Science Week 2026 launched to promote STEM education and innovation

The tenth edition of National Science Week (NSW) 2026, organised by the Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre (RGSC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Science and Research, opened this morning at the Côte d’Or National Sports Complex under the theme “STEM: Exploring, Innovating and Inspiring.”

The event brought together representatives from tertiary education institutions, various Ministries, parastatal bodies and the private sector, alongside students and members of the public, to showcase and promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The opening ceremony was attended by the Minister of Tertiary Education, Science and Research, Dr Kaviraj Sharma Sukon, as well as the Chairperson of RGSC, Mr Partish Chumroo, the Director of RGSC, Dr Aman Kumar Maudhoo, and other officials.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Sukon highlighted the declining number of students opting for science-related subjects and stressed the importance of reversing this trend to support the country's future development. He underscored that science should not be viewed merely as an academic subject but as a means of fostering curiosity, critical thinking and innovation. While acknowledging the growing use of Artificial Intelligence among students, he emphasised that genuine scientific progress begins with questioning, observation and the pursuit of knowledge.

The Minister further encouraged students to develop a spirit of inquiry and actively seek solutions to real-world challenges, including climate change, environmental conservation and food security. He also urged the educators to promote science beyond the classroom through practical learning experiences and experimentation.

Reiterating the need for problem-solvers and innovators in an increasingly technology-driven world, Dr Sukon expressed his appreciation to all stakeholders, exhibitors, educators and participating institutions for contributing to the success of the event.

For his part, Mr Chumroo underlined the significance of the NSW in bringing together key stakeholders from the education, public and private sectors to showcase the role of science and technology in national development. He noted that the event provides a valuable opportunity for students to discover emerging fields, interact with professionals and gain insight into STEM-related career prospects.

Dr Maulloo emphasised that the event has been designed to make science more accessible and engaging for the public while showcasing the contributions of participating institutions to innovation, research and technological advancement in Mauritius.
