Mauritius celebrates newest Centenarian, Mr Dinnoo Seesungkur

Mr Dinnoo Seesungkur born on 30 May 1926 celebrated his 100th birthday, yesterday, at Jay Villa, Roche Noires in the presence of the President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Dharambeer Gokhool, Members of Parliament, family members and close friends.

To mark the occasion, the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity presented to Mr Seesungkur a cheque of Rs 26,203; one Midea Microwave set; a bouquet of flowers; the centenarian medal; and a certificate. The National Solidarity Fund also awarded him a cheque of Rs 10,000, while the Senior Citizens Council honoured him with a gift set.

Born in Plaine des Roches, Mr Seesungkur never attended school. He was civilly married to Mrs Sooraycoomaree Rameessur and the couple lived at Plaine Des Roches. Throughout his working life, he undertook various occupations. During the sugarcane harvest season, he worked as a cane cutter and loader, while in the off-season he was employed as a labourer at the Bras d’Eau orchard and on vegetable plantations. He also earned a living as a fruit and vegetable vendor before later joining the Central Water Authority as a contractual worker.

The centenarian has eleven children, eight sons and three daughters: twenty-six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Mr Seesungkur is a vegatarian. He enjoys quite a sound health and goes for morning walk every day. He has a hearing impairment but does not use hearing aids and benefits from monthly domiciliary visits provided by the Ministry.

He attributes his longevity to his hard work, his daily morning walk, his faith in God, dedication to help neighbours in need and the love and support of his family.
