MRA-US Workshop reinforces Intelligence and Investigative Capabilities
A five-day regional workshop on “Building Intelligence Bases and Utilising Human Sources”, organised under the initiative of the United States Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to strengthen capacities to combat transnational organised crime, concluded on 29 May 2026 at the Custom House in Mer Rouge, Port Louis.
Hosted by the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA), the workshop was held from 25 to 29 May 2026 and brought together prosecutors, investigators, intelligence officers, and analysts from government and law enforcement agencies in Mauritius and Seychelles. The sessions were facilitated by FBI experts.
The workshop was facilitated by FBI experts, and during the closing ceremony, FBI Programme Managers Mr Jeffrey D. Rees and Ms Anna Teczynska underscored the critical role of intelligence-led investigations, information sharing, and regional cooperation in effectively combating organised crime.
Speaking on the occasion, the Director-General of the MRA, Mr Rohit Ramnawaz, emphasised the importance of continuous training and capacity-building in enhancing institutional effectiveness and strengthening responses to evolving criminal threats. He expressed appreciation to partner organisations for such initiatives while adding that more training sessions will be organised in the future.
The Chargé d’Affaires of the US Embassy, Mr Craig Halbmaier reaffirmed commitment to continued cooperation with Mauritius and in combating financial crimes and transnational criminal networks through sustained collaboration and capacity-building efforts.
The workshop focused on identifying and exploiting multiple sources of intelligence to support criminal investigation and prosecution. Participants also engaged in practical exercises designed to strengthen investigative and prosecutorial skills and promote best practices for successful case adjudication.
