Minister Gondeea Meets UNESCO and ICOMOS Representatives on Indentured Labour Heritage

The Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Mahendra Gondeea, received the Project Management Officer at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) World Heritage Centre, Mr Valentino Etowar, and the Director of the Evaluation Unit of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), Ms Gwenaelle Bourdin, at his office in Port Louis, today.

Discussions focused on indentured labour in the Indian Ocean region and on the development of a roadmap aimed at strengthening the documentation, preservation and promotion of the history of indentured labour.

Emphasis was placed on improving understanding of the material traces and heritage sites associated with indentured labour in several countries, while reinforcing the historical and contemporary links between indenture experiences throughout the Indian Ocean region.
