Mrs Kalawti Ramnawaj celebrates her 100th Birthday

Mrs Kalawti Ramnawaj celebrated her centenarian birthday on 28 May 2026 during an official ceremony held at her residence in Clairfonds, Vacoas, in the presence of the Deputy Mayor of the Municipal Council of Vacoas/Phoenix, Mrs Christelle Legrand, and her family and friends.

To honour the centenarian, the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity presented Mrs Ramnawaj with a bouquet, a centenarian medal, a certificate and a cheque of Rs 26,203. She also received a cheque of Rs 10,000 from the National Solidarity Fund as well as gifts comprising a shield, bath towel, hand towel and a birthday card from the Senior Citizens Council.

Born at Bonne Terre, Vacoas, on 28 May 1926, Mrs Ramnawaj never attended school. At the age of 20, she got married to Mr Deenoo Bassoodeho and settled in Clairfonds. Following the passing of her husband at the age of 47, she worked as a maid to support her household and raise her children.

From their union, 10 children were born. Mrs Ramnawaj is today surrounded by a large family comprising 15 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

The centenarian enjoys vegetarian food and is known for her simple and disciplined lifestyle. Throughout her life, she remained devoted to household responsibilities and actively participated in family prayers and social gatherings. She also maintained close relationships with family members and neighbours.

Mrs Ramnawaj remains in relatively good health and is able to walk without assistance and still has good eyesight, although she suffers from hearing impairment. She attributes her longevity to hard work, a hygienic lifestyle, unwavering faith in God and the love and care provided by her children.
