Mother’s Day Celebrations: Port Louis Waterfront to host National Cooperative Fair

A National Cooperative Fair is scheduled for Friday 29 and Saturday 30 May 2026 at the Pedestrian Alley of the Port Louis Waterfront in the context of Mother’s Day celebrations. The event, organised by the Cooperative Division of the Ministry of Industry, SMEs and Cooperatives, will be held from 09h00 to 17h00. The aim is to promote the Mauritian cooperative sector while providing a marketing platform for locally made products.

The fair will bring together some 54 cooperators representing 36 cooperative societies. Visitors will have the opportunity to discover and purchase a wide range of products ranging from fresh fruits and vegetables, plants, agro-processed products, local delicacies, handicrafts to textiles and decorative items. As it coincides with the Mother’s Day weekend, the initiative will also provide the public with an opportunity to celebrate the occasion by supporting local producers and artisans and purchasing authentic gift ideas made by Mauritian cooperatives.

The cooperative movement continues to play an important role in the socio-economic development of Mauritius. Based on the principle of “one member, one vote”, cooperatives are democratically managed enterprises founded on values of solidarity, equality, mutual support and collective responsibility. Beyond profit-making, they aim to improve the living conditions of their members and contribute to community development.

Mauritius has a long cooperative tradition dating back to 1913 with the establishment of the first cooperative society for small sugar cane planters. Today, the sector comprises around 1,200 active cooperatives, including those in Rodrigues, representing nearly 87,327 members and generating an estimated annual turnover of Rs 5.6 billion. Cooperatives operate across more than 25 sectors, including agriculture, fisheries, public transport, handicrafts, credit and savings.

As part of its efforts to strengthen the sector, the Cooperative Division provides several support measures to cooperators. These comprise training programmes, technical advice and financial assistance to support economic activities and modernisation projects. Cooperative fairs are also organised on a regular basis to promote local products and create commercial opportunities for cooperatives. Similar events have already been held this year at Quatre Bornes Market, Quartier des Serres, Mahébourg Waterfront and Victoria Urban Terminal.

The Ministry looks forward to welcoming visitors to attend the fair in large numbers to support Mauritian cooperators, celebrate Mother’s Day and promote local consumption. Another National Cooperative Fair is scheduled for 6 and 7 June 2026 at the public beach of Flic-en-Flac from 09h00 to 18h00.
