Trauma and Emergency and Stroke Units inaugurated at SSRN Hospital
The Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Anil Kumar Bachoo, inaugurated, today, the new Trauma and Emergency Unit and Stroke Unit at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam National (SSRN) Hospital in Pamplemousses, marking a major milestone in the transformation, modernisation and strengthening of healthcare services in Mauritius.
The Minister of Local Government, Mr Ranjiv Woochit; Members of the National Assembly; senior health officials; prominent doctors; and other personalities were also present at the ceremony.
In his address, Minister Bachoo emphasised that Government is taking concrete actions to strengthen the healthcare system and ensure equitable access to modern and specialised medical services across the country.
He recalled that, in the national budget 2025-2026, Government had made clear and transformative commitments to modernise the healthcare sector and respond more effectively to the growing needs of the population. He announced that several key budgetary measures have already been implemented. They include the setting up of a Diabetes and Vascular Health Centre; the establishment of geriatric wards in regional hospitals; and the setting up of Trauma and Emergency and Stroke Units.
Speaking about the Trauma and Emergency Unit, Minister Bachoo noted that the facility introduces a modern triage system aimed at ensuring faster and more effective emergency care. Patients requiring urgent intervention, such as those involved in accidents or suffering from heart attacks or strokes, will receive immediate attention under a colour-coded system designed to prioritise critical cases.
He underlined that the initiative addresses longstanding concerns regarding waiting times in emergency departments and aims to significantly reduce preventable deaths caused by delays in treatment.
The Minister further stressed that stroke remains one of the leading causes of mortality and disability in Mauritius, adding that dedicated Stroke Units have been internationally proven to reduce deaths and long-term disability through early detection, rapid intervention and specialised rehabilitation.
He reaffirmed Government’s objective to establish Stroke Units in all regional hospitals so that patients can receive treatment closer to home and within critical response times. The newly inaugurated Units, he said, reflect Government’s renewed commitment to saving lives, improving patient outcomes, and ensuring that every citizen has access to timely, specialised and quality healthcare services.
Addressing the issue of labour shortage in the medical sector, he assured healthcare staff that Government will address the matter and ensure fair treatment and improved working conditions for all medical personnel.
For his part, Minister Woochit reaffirmed Government’s commitment to modernising the healthcare system and protecting the well-being of the population. He emphasised that healthcare remains a key priority for Government, adding that it will continue to invest in training, efficient and timely health services, and upgraded healthcare infrastructure aimed at preventing loss of life and improving citizens’ quality of life.
