GIS – 20 March 2026: A site visit was undertaken by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Darmarajen Nagalingum, and the Minister of Land Transport, Mr Osman Mahomed, on 18 March 2026 at the car park of Anjalay Coopen Stadium to determine which refurbishment and upgrading works need to be undertaken for motor racing events to be held at this venue. In a statement, Minister Nagalingum highlighted that the upgrading works will provide short term solutions to allow speed enthusiasts to practise their sport in conditions where they do not endanger the lives of others. He moreover recalled that several motor racing events have been held at the car park of Anjalay Coopen Stadium in the past. Mr Nagalingum also reminded that funds have been allocated in the last Budget for the construction of a proper rally circuit in the future. For his part, Minister Mahomed pointed out that the upgrading works will be undertaken in the light of the introduction of the Penalty Point System, which imposes severe penalties on those who race on public roads. Representatives of the Road Development Authority as well as the Traffic Management and Road Safety Unit will determine how the car park can be upgraded to host motor racing events, he observed. As such, a Technical Committee will be set up and will be presided the Director of the Sports Division of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, while the views and suggestions of various racing clubs will be considered, he added.
