Inauguration of Trauma and Emergency Unit at SAJ Hospital to strengthen emergency medical services

GIS – 18 March 2026: The Trauma and Emergency Unit at the Sir Anerood Jugnauth Hospital will become operational on 23 March 2026. This specialised facility is designed to provide rapid and high-quality care in emergency situations. The inauguration ceremony was held today in the presence of the Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Anil Kumar Bachoo; Members of the National Assembly, Messers Raviraj Beechook, and Avinash Ramkalawon; Regional Health Director at SAJ Hospital, Dr Sookmanee; and Acting Director Emergency Services, Dr Bosoondyal . In his address, Minister Bachoo emphasised that the Trauma and Emergency Unit forms part of a broader national strategy aimed at transforming emergency medical care in Mauritius. He highlighted Government’s commitment to strengthening the healthcare system by ensuring the provision of timely, efficient, and high-quality emergency services. He further underscored the importance of modern infrastructure, specialised medical teams and well-established critical care protocols. He reiterated that Mauritius is striving to align its emergency medical services with international standards, ensuring that public healthcare delivery keeps pace with global best practices. The Minister indicated that emergency situations such as heart attacks and strokes require rapid decision-making, coordinated teamwork and immediate life-saving interventions. It is thus essential to ensure adequate infrastructure and well-trained medical personnel to enhance patient safety as well as improve the efficiency and responsiveness of emergency medical services in Mauritius, he said. He highlighted that the new Unit incorporates a modern triage system based on internationally recognised colour codes (Red, Yellow, and Green). This system enables immediate patient assessment and prioritisation according to the severity of their condition rather than order of arrival. Similar Trauma and Emergency Units will be progressively established in other regional hospitals across the island, added Minister Bachoo.
