Mrs Sreekissoon joins the ranks of centenarians

GIS – 16 March 2026: Mrs Kantee Sreekissoon, also known as Dadi Dhanmanee, celebrated her 100ᵗʰ birthday yesterday in Mont Ida. The milestone was marked with a ceremony organised by the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity in honour of the centenarian.The Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Anil Kumar Bachoo; Members of the National Assembly, Messrs Raviraj Sinha Beechook and Chandraprakash Ramkalawon; as well as family members and friends were present for the celebrations.On this occasion, the Ministry presented Mrs Sreekissoon with a cheque of Rs 26,203, a bouquet, a centenarian medal, a certificate, a mixer grinder and a cooking pan with a glass lid. She also received a cheque of Rs 10,000 from the National Solidarity Fund, gifts from the Senior Citizens Council, and a Special Telephone Service offered by Mauritius Telecom. Born on 15 March 1926, Mrs Sreekissoon grew up in a family of six siblings and did not have the opportunity to attend school. At the age of 18, she met her husband, Mr Deobhajun Sreekissoon, a fruit cultivator and seller in Curepipe. They were religiously married on 06 July 1944 and later solemnised their civil marriage on 13 November 1961. After her marriage, she devoted herself to her family as a housewife and raised six children. Following the demise of her husband in 1962, Mrs Sreekissoon worked as a labourer in sugar cane fields to support her family. Today, she is surrounded by a large family comprising eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Mrs Sreekissoon has always enjoyed gardening, embroidery and sewing. Even at the age of 100, she remains active and continues to do light gardening and occasionally sews her blouses. Her longevity is attributed to a happy environment, spirituality, meditation, discipline, faith in God, good manners and self care. She maintains a daily routine that includes yoga, meditation and walking in the garden.
