The two-day initiative, running from 08 to 09 April 2026, brings together key stakeholders to explore opportunities in regional trade in services.

The opening ceremony was attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Dhananjay Ramful; Economic Development Board (EDB) Mauritius Chief Executive Officer, Mr Mahen Abhimanu Kundasamy and Director, Industrial Development and Trade at the SADC Secretariat, Mr Dhuraj Kassee.

In his keynote address, Minister Ramful underpinned that the workshop aims to enhance access for women and youth to opportunities in trade in services within the SADC region. He acknowledged the challenges often faced by these entrepreneurs, such as limited access to finance, difficulties in reaching markets, and inadequate information on regional trade systems. The workshop, he explained, would equip participants with practical tools to navigate these systems and seize business opportunities effectively.

The Minister further highlighted the growing importance of trade in services as a driver of economic growth, underlining its significant contribution to Mauritius’ GDP and employment. He noted that digitalisation and e-commerce are transforming service delivery, enabling businesses to expand into international markets more efficiently. “This workshop provides a timely platform to empower women and youth, strengthen their participation in regional trade and support inclusive and sustainable economic development,” he added.

For his part, Mr Kassee emphasised that trade in services has become a key driver of economic growth, innovation, and regional integration within the SADC region. He pointed out that while women and youth-led enterprises are increasingly contributing to this sector, they continue to face challenges such as limited access to finance, market information and regulatory constraints.

Organised by EDB Mauritius in collaboration with the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Secretariat and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, the workshop aims to equip youth and women entrepreneurs with practical skills to access and grow within SADC regional markets.

The programme features sessions on the SADC Protocol on Trade in Services, digitalisation, artificial intelligence, digital payments and branding, while also providing a platform for experience-sharing by successful women-led businesses.

<p style='margin-top: 30px; These include holding a passport that remains valid
beyond the intended period of stay, possessing a valid return ticket, being
eligible to re-enter the country of origin or residence, demonstrating
sufficient financial means to support the stay, having confirmed accommodation
or sponsorship, refraining from engaging in any gainful employment, and not
being classified as a prohibited immigrant.

The
Prime Minister stressed that any non-citizen who fails to meet any of these
requirements is not admitted into Mauritius, irrespective of nationality.

Highlighting
the country’s openness to international visitors, the Prime Minister noted that
Mauritius has been ranked 10th out of 199 countries in the 2026
Henley Openness Index, which measures the number of nationalities a country
permits to enter without obtaining a visa beforehand.

He
pointed out that while the majority of foreign nationals receive a visa on
arrival, nationals of 15 countries are required to obtain a visa before
travelling to Mauritius, in accordance with Section 12 of the Passports Act and
the Eleventh Schedule of the Passport Regulations.

The
Prime Minister further indicated that the inclusion of countries on the
prescribed list is determined after careful assessment of several factors,
including national security considerations, international relations,
immigration policy and the risk of visa abuse.

According
to guidelines issued by the Passport and Immigration Office, nationals of these
countries are required to submit their visa applications at least one month
before their intended travel date. Where all required documentation is in
order, visa applications are generally processed within approximately 12
working days.

The
Prime Minister emphasised that nationals of the prescribed countries remain
welcome to visit Mauritius and are not charged any visa fee. He added that, in
addition to the standard immigration requirements, the Passport and Immigration
Office conducts enhanced security checks before granting entry clearance.

The
Prime Minister additionally highlighted that the Budget 2026–2027 makes
provision for the introduction of a new digital e-visa system. The platform
will enable non-citizens from all countries to apply for and obtain an
electronic visa prior to travelling to Mauritius. The Institute is currently
extending its research to marine crustaceans. The genetic information gathered
has been compiled into the MOI’s online Marine Diversity and Genetics Databank,
creating a comprehensive national reference library that supports species
identification, fisheries management, biodiversity conservation, seafood
traceability, and the sustainable use of marine resources.

According to the
Director of the MOI, Dr Daniel Marie, the DNA-barcoding initiative has considerably
strengthened the country's capacity to accurately identify marine species and
has enhanced evidence-based management of marine living resources.

“The initiative
has also generated critical baseline data on marine biodiversity within
Mauritius’ EEZ, contributing to the protection of vulnerable species, the
promotion of sustainable fisheries, and the alignment of economic development
with biodiversity conservation and ecosystem resilience,” he said.

Building on the
expertise and infrastructure developed through the DNA-barcoding programme, the
MOI is now integrating environmental DNA (eDNA) methodologies into its marine
biodiversity assessment activities, particularly under the Marine Resources
Mapping Project.

Environmental DNA is
an innovative and non-invasive technique that enables scientists to identify
species by analysing traces of genetic material present in seawater samples.
Unlike traditional survey methods that often require the capture or direct observation
of organisms, eDNA can rapidly detect a wide range of species while minimising
disturbance to natural habitats.

“The technology
offers significant opportunities for near real-time biodiversity assessment and
can facilitate the monitoring of endangered, protected and commercially
important species. It also enables the identification of biodiversity hotspots
and supports the monitoring of ecosystem changes across the marine environment,”
Dr Marie emphasised.

The marine
environment remains one of Mauritius’ most valuable natural assets,
underpinning key economic sectors such as fisheries, tourism, biotechnology,
pharmaceuticals and other emerging blue economy industries. Marine ecosystems
also play a vital role in supporting food security, employment and livelihoods.

However, increasing
pressures from pollution, habitat degradation, overexploitation of resources,
invasive species and climate change are threatening marine biodiversity. Ocean
warming and acidification, in particular, are accelerating ecosystem degradation
and increasing the risk of species loss before they can be adequately
documented.

In this context, the
adoption of advanced molecular tools is expected to strengthen the country's
ability to better monitor biodiversity, assess ecological responses to
environmental pressures and support evidence-based decision-making. The
integration of eDNA into biodiversity monitoring programmes will enhance
Mauritius’ capacity to conserve its rich marine heritage, improve the
resilience of marine ecosystems, and support the long-term sustainability and
competitiveness of the nation's blue economy.

The MOI's ongoing initiatives align fully with
Government's vision for the sustainable management of marine resources and clearly
demonstrate how scientific innovation can contribute to biodiversity
conservation while supporting economic growth and national development.

<p style='margin-top: 30px; text-align: justify; font-family: 'Roboto', sans-serif;>01 July 2026

Email: gis@govmu.org

Website: https://gis.govmu.org

Mobile App: GIS News

Topics: Technology, Maritime
Back

IFB - PROCUREMENT OF DEFERASIROX 100MG TABLET AND OTHER DRUGS (RELAUNCH)

<p style='margin-top: 30px; text-align: justify; font-family: 'Roboto', sans-serif;>01 July 2026

Email: gis@govmu.org

Website: https://gis.govmu.org

Mobile App: GIS News

Topics: All, Tenders
Back

Infrastructure: New footbridge ensures safer connectivity

PreviousNext

The
Minister of National Infrastructure, Mr Govindranath Gunness, inaugurated a new
footbridge, this morning, at Les Casernes in Curepipe. He highlighted the key findings of
the review conducted by Crossrail International Ltd namely that the Metro
Express system generates core monetised benefits estimated at approximately Rs
1.7 billion annually, based on assumptions and data provided by MEL and using
a UK methodology.

According
to Mr Mahomed, these monetised benefits have not been considered when assessing
the construction and operational costs of the Metro Express system. The positive
outcomes include avoided road accidents; benefits to users from business,
commuting and leisure travel; the energy value attributed to avoided carbon
emissions; and reduced traffic congestion.
