31 May - A Unit of the Lois Lagesse Trust Fund is inaugurated at Goodlands. It is the first unit catering for the visually impaired in the North.

30 May - A Summit on Leadership in a Globalised World: Nurturing New Partners opens at Grand Baie International Conference Centre. It is organised by All India Management Association in partnership with the Indian High Commission, Enterprise Mauritius, the Board of Investment and the Mauritian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Women and Children in Distress
28 May – Cheques totalling Rs 1, 193, 470 are presented to four NGOs under the Special Collaborative Programme for Women and Children in distress, run by the Ministry of Gender Equality, Child Development and Family Welfare.

Agreement Signed for Transfer of Sentenced Somali Pirates
25 May – An Agreement on the transfer of sentenced pirates from Mauritius to Somalia is signed in Port Louis by the Mauritian Government and the Somali authorities. The Agreement is in line with Government’s effort to counter piracy in the region.

National Youth Achievement Award
25 May – Certificates and Bronze Award are presented, in Quartier Militaire, to young people from Shrimati Indira Gandhi State Secondary School in the context of the National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA) programme.

FSC Mauritius and SEC Nigeria Sign MoU
17 May - The Financial Services Commission of Mauritius (FSC) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of Nigeria sign a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on co-operation, consultation and exchange of information. The MoU establishes a common framework of cooperation between both regulatory bodies to foster mutual assistance and facilitate exchange of information in their respective duties.

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day

Job prospects in Canada – Press Conference
17 May - The Minister of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment announces that Mauritius has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Association Communautaire Francesquoise and the University of Reginaand in Saskatchewan, Canada, to facilitate the integration of Mauritian students and their families in that Province.

E-tribunal System
17 May - The e-tribunal system is launched on a full-fledged basis at the Employment Relations Tribunal (ERT). With the e-tribunal electronic case management system, parties can exchange pleadings by e-mail and the physical attendance of parties is not required until a matter is fully in shape for hearing.

Strengthening Family Values
17 May – A half-day seminar, at Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre, Bell Village, focuses on Strengthening Family Values. The seminar is held in the context of the Family Month to celebrate International Day of Families.

Financial Services - FSC Signatory of IOSCO Agreement
16 May - The Financial Services Commission (FSC), Mauritius becomes a signatory of the International Organisation of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) Multilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MMoU) on matters relating to consultation and cooperation, and the exchange of information.

16 May – Launching, at Helvetia Youth Centre, of a two-day training programme on Human Rights for Youth Cadres.

Regional Workshop for Judicial Officers
15 May – A three-day Second Regional East African Judicial Officers Training Workshop on Counter-terrorism, Transnational Crimes and International Criminal Justice is hosted at Tamassa Resort, Bel Ombre. It aims at upholding the development of specialised expertise and knowledge of senior judicial officers within the East African region on matters relating to complex transnational, organised and international crimes.

EU-ESA - iEPA provisionally implemented
14 May – The interim Economic Partnership Agreement (iEPA) between the European Union (EU) and the Eastern and Southern African (ESA) countries is implemented provisionally. The iEPA signed by Mauritius, Madagascar, Seychelles, Zimbabwe and the EU in 2009, is the first EPA to be implemented in Africa.

Hydrography – Handing over of Fair Sheets
14 May – The hydrographic survey data known as fair sheets are remitted to the Minister of Housing and Lands by the High Commissioner of India in Ebène, following the completion of the hydrographic surveys for regions ranging from Bel Ombre to Blue Bay, and from Flic en Flac to Albion by the Indian Naval Ship, INS Darshak.

Asia/Africa International Fiscal Association Conference
11 May - The 6th Edition of the Asia/Africa International Fiscal Association Conference, with focus on International Tax Developments-Global and Regional opens at the Hilton Hotel, Wolmar, Flic en Flac. The two-day conference aims at promoting a better understanding of international taxation and its incidence on cross-border trade and investment.

HRDC Manuals to Guide Businesses Identify Training Needs
10 May - The Human Resource Development Council (HRDC) launches two distance learning manuals on Training Needs Analysis (TNA) and Generic Design of Training Programme at NG Tower, Ebène. The aim is to encourage local companies to carry out training needs analysis by providing TNA and training design techniques to a maximum number of employers.

Guidelines for Student Charter
10 May - A half-day workshop at Le Sirius Labourdonnais Waterfront Hotel, Port Louis, analyses the implementation status of the Guidelines for Student Charter in Post-secondary Educational Institutions. The Guidelines, released in December 2010, set out the minimum standards a student might expect from an institution and vice-versa.

Caravane de la Science
10 May - The Caravane de la Science organises a series of science-based activities at Sir Abdool Raman Osman State Secondary College, Phoenix. The aim is to promote the understanding of science issues and supplement the school curriculum in a non-formal and interactive way.

ICT-BPO Workshop
10 May – Workshop on Moving the ICT-BPO Industry to the next stage of growth opens at Cyber Tower 1, in Ebène Cyber-city.

10 May – Launching of the 5th edition of the Youth Excellence Award at the Municipality of Port Louis.

9 May - A Nutrition Education Month kick-starts at Adolphe de Plevitz State Secondary School (Boys) at Grand Bay. The theme chosen is Healthy eating for all with emphasis on the consumption of fruits and vegetables.

Mauritius/Kenya –Taxation and Investment Agreements Signed
7 May - A Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) and an Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (IPPA) are signed between Mauritius and Kenya.

IOR-ARC Secretariat - New premises at Ebène
7 May – Inauguration of the New premises of the IOR-ARC (Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Cooperation) Secretariat at NeXTeracom Building, in Ebène Cyber-city. The 2nd Bi-Annual Committee of Senior Officials Meeting also opens.

International Day of Families - Press Conference
4 May – The Minister of Gender Equality, Child Development and Family Welfare announces activities being organised to mark International Day of Families.

Judicial Training Workshop
3 May – A two-day Judicial Training Workshop on the New York Arbitration Convention of 1958 opens at the Trou aux Biches Resort. Chiefs Justices and Judges from Malawi, Botswana, Burundi, Seychelles, Zambia, Rwanda, Lesotho, Tanzania, Mozambique, Namibia, Zanzibar, Swaziland and South Africa as well as Mauritian Judges participate.

2 May - Some 50 legal practitioners in Mauritius attend, at Le Labourdonnais Hotel Caudan Waterfront, a one-day introductory seminar on International Arbitration. The seminar gives a practical overview of international arbitration law and procedure.

Labour -Site Visit at Esquel (Mauritius)
2 May - The Minister of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment conducts a site visit at the Esquel (Mauritius) at Mare Gravier, Beau Bassin, to witness whether the company is in compliance with the provisions of the labour laws namely the Employment Relations Act and the Employment Rights Act.

Training on Human Rights
2 May - Around 100 members of NGOs attend a two-day training programme on human rights at the University of Mauritius at the initiative of the Prime Minister’s Office in collaboration with the National Human Rights Commission.
