Intellectual Property: Technical Assistance and Capacity Building Workshop
31 July – The Mauritius Research Council in collaboration with local and regional organisations organises a two-day workshop on Technology Transfer. The objective is to enhance knowledge of research and innovation managers, researchers and individuals on Technology Transfer and to develop the appropriate mechanisms and services for its effective use among research/ training/ teaching institutions and industry.

 
ICT Skills Development Programme - Press Conference
30 July – The Minister of Information and Communication Technology elaborates on the introduction of an ICT Skills Development Programme to the tune Rs 50 million to train youth in Mauritius and Rodrigues for their eventual employment in the ICT/BPO Industry. The ICT Skills Development Programme, a public private partnership initiative, aims at palliating shortages of ICT professionals.

 
Investment of About Rs 8 to 10 Billion in the Fisheries Sector
27 July – At a press conference, held in Port Louis, the Minister of Fisheries announces that some Rs 8 to 10 billion worth of investment will be made by French group Sapmer in the fisheries sector in Mauritius.

 
Science Educator’s Workshop
27 July – The Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre organises a workshop for science educators working in secondary schools run by the Mahatma Gandhi Institute and the Rabindranath Tagore Institute Council to enhance the teaching and learning of science in schools and encourage teachers to motivate their students to opt for science as well as to develop a particular interest for scientific matters pertaining to their daily life.

 
WIFI Launched at Municipality of Vacoas/Phoenix
26 July – Wireless Fidelity (WIFI) is launched at the Municipality of Vacoas/Phoenix. The project consists of installing base transmission stations on local authorities’ premises to provide WIFI service enabling Mauritians to have access to free internet connectivity.

 
Workshop on Skills Gap in the Manufacturing and Export-Oriented Enterprises Sectors
26 July – Over 150 professionals and stakeholders from the Manufacturing and Export-Oriented Enterprises (EOE) sectors participate in a workshop organised by the Human Resource Development Council at La Cannelle, Domaine Les Pailles. The workshop focuses on skills mismatch in the Manufacturing and EOE sectors in Mauritius.

 
Inauguration of Block C, Flacq Hospital
26 July – The Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Public Infrastructure, National Development Unit, Land Transport and Shipping, and the Minister of Health and Quality of Life, inaugurate a new block (Block C) at Flacq Hospital. The new block comprises of a neonatology unit, a cardiology ward for both males and females a male medical ward and a male orthopaedic ward.

 
Award of Certificates Ceremony of the National Agricultural Clubs’ Projects Competition
26 July – Award of certificates ceremony of the national agricultural clubs’ projects competition, organised by AREU to reflect on the Ministry’s policy towards agri-businesses, is held at Ilot.

25 July – A Business Angels Forum, a platform for investors to meet entrepreneurs with innovative and commercially viable projects, is held at the Small and Medium Enterprise Development Authority premises, Coromandel.

 
National Assembly - New Speaker Elected
24 July – Mr Abdool Razack Mahomed Ameen Peeroo GOSK, SC, is unanimously elected Speaker of the Mauritius National Assembly.

 
Green ICT Training
24 July – A three-day Green ICT Training which focuses on the benefits of Green ICT, brings together executives and IT professionals involved in special projects such as e-waste management and energy efficiency, as well as internal and external auditors responsible for auditing Green ICT practices, to assist them in designing and implementing a Green ICT Policy and Action Plan.

 
16th Model United Nations Conference
24 July – Some 700 students from 113 schools participate in the 16th Model United Nations (MUN) Conference at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute Auditorium, Moka.

 
Activities to Mark NCG Silver Jubilee Anniversary
24 July – The National Coast Guard (NCG) marks its Silver Jubilee Anniversary by activities including Ceremonial Parade at Port Louis Harbour, community service by NCG personnel to assist needy people, organisation of basic First Aid course, cleaning campaign, maritime exhibition and blood donation.

 
Work Placement for Secondary School Students during July/August 2012 School Holidays
24 July – The Human Resource Development Council offers a two-week work placement in 32 organisations/institutions to 213 students from 53 schools during the July/August 2012 school holidays.

 
NYAA – Basic Fire Fighting Course
23 July – Launching of a five-day Basic Fire Fighting Course at the Fire Service Training School in the context of the National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA) programme. Participants are trained by instructors of the Fire Services Department on fire prevention and safety measures, and are initiated to drills and to the principles of extinguishing fire, amongst others.

 
Swearing in of the Fifth President of the Republic
21 July – Mr. Rajkeswur Purryag, GCSK, GOSK, is sworn in as the fifth President of the Republic of Mauritius, at the State House, Le Réduit.

 
CJSOI Games – Mauritian Athletes Rewarded
21 July – Mauritian athletes are presented trophies at le Sofitel hotel, Bel Ombre, after winning the 8th edition of the Commission de la Jeunesse et des Sports de l'Océan Indien (CJSOI) Games held from 9 to 15 July in Comoros.

 
Finals of Mini Soccer Festival
21 July – The final phases of the Phoenix Insurance Mini Soccer for Primary Schools are held at the Sir Gaëtan Duval stadium in Rose-Hill.

 
Spécial Vacances – Activities launched
21 July – The Spécial Vacances programme of the Ministry of Youth and Sports is launched in Rose Hill. On that occasion, air tickets are presented to 22 young people participating in a Youth Exchange programme in Rodrigues.

21 July –A two-day Camp de Vacances for 50 young people in the context of the Spécial Vacances programme, is held at Pointe Jérôme Residential Training Centre, Mahebourg.

 
Training Course on Research Methodology
21 July – Launching of a training course on research methodology organised by the Mauritius Research Council in collaboration with the University of Mauritius and the University of Technology, Mauritius. The training course provides an overview of the way to design and conduct effective research studies in both Social and Natural Sciences.

 
Forum of Women with Disabilities Launched
20 July – The Forum of Women with Disabilities, a common platform to represent and support some 20 000 Mauritian women with different disabilities, is launched by the National Council for the Rehabilitation of Disabled Persons in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Security, National Solidarity and Reform Institutions at Dr. James Burty David Recreation Centre, Pointe aux Sables.

 
Caravane de la Science
19 July – Droopnath Ramphul State Secondary School welcomes the Caravane de la Science on its premises in Calebasses. The programme comprises exhibitions by the Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre and other organisations, film projections, science shows and talks/lectures. The initiative aims at promoting Science and Technology.

 
Inauguration of the Newly Built Notre Dame de Fatimah Bridge
19 July – The Prime minister inaugurates the newly built Notre Dame de Fatimah Bridge at Petite Rivière Noire. The new bridge has necessitated investments to the tune of Rs 22m.

 
Workshop for Unemployed Women and Youth
19 July – A half-day workshop for unemployed women and youth of Camp-Chapelon is organised by the National Institute for Cooperative Entrepreneurship in collaboration with the Raita Women Entrepreneurs Cooperative Society at the Camp Chapelon Community Centre, Pailles.

19 July – Opening of a Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) Regional Centre (South) at Remono Street, Curepipe, in line with Government policy to bring information and skills at the doorstep of the needy at regional level.

18 July – Half-day workshop organised by the Ministry of Business, Enterprise and Cooperatives in collaboration with the New Hope Women Entrepreneurs Cooperative Credit Union Ltd is held at Riche-Mare Community Centre.

 
National Youth Council Website
18 July – The website of National Youth Council, aiming to provide a platform where young people can share their views and help establish a national youth agenda for Mauritius, is launched at Le Labourdonnais Waterfront Hotel, Port Louis.

 
Inauguration of Dr Mahmoodkhan Hyderkhan Mediclinic
18 July – The Prime minister inaugurates the Dr Mahmoodkhan Hyderkhan Mediclinic at Nyon Street, Port-Louis. Several health services are provided at this health institution which has a population of about 26 300 persons in its catchment area.

 
Cleaning Campaign by National Coast Guard
17 July – As part of its Silver Jubilee Anniversary activities, the National Coast Guard conducts an island-wide cleaning campaign at prominent beaches and lagoons in Mauritius and in Rodrigues and Agalega so as to ensure a safer, greener and eco-friendly environment in line with the concept Maurice Ile Durable.

 
Penalty Points System
17 July – The Road Traffic (Amendment) Bill, which provides for the application of the Penalty Points System to driving licences, is being voted in the National Assembly. The legislation may cause a driver to have his driving licence suspended for at least six months if he has exceeded the threshold limit of 15 penalty points.

 
MoU to help SMEs Keep Pace With Technology Development
16 July – A Memorandum of Understanding, aiming at assisting SMEs to keep pace with technology development and use technologies effectively to modernise their business operations and improve productivity, is signed by the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority and the Mauritius Computing Services Ltd at the Industrial Zone, Coromandel.

 
International Textile and Apparel Sustainability Conference
16 July – Mauritius hosts the International Textile and Apparel Sustainability Conference at Octave Wiehe Auditorium, Réduit. The four-day event, organised by the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Mauritius (UoM), addresses the issues of sustainability in the broad areas of textile and apparel technology, production as well as consumption.

 
CJSOI Games: Mauritius Ranks First
15 July – Mauritius ranks first at the 8th edition of the Commission de la Jeunesse et des Sports de l’Océan Indien (CJSOI) Games held from 9 to 15 July in Comoros. The country wins 8 medals (5 gold and 3 silver medals).

 
Workshop on Prospects for Small-Scale Fishing
14 July – Launching of a workshop on "Prospects for small-scale fishing in Mauritius" at the Village Hall in Trou d'Eau Douce. The event is organised by the Ministry of Business, Enterprise and Cooperatives and the Mauritius Fishermen Cooperative Federation Ltd in collaboration with Anahita World Class Sanctuary.

HRDC Launches the Sponsored Pre-Job Training Programme
12 July – The Human Resource Development Council (HRDC) launches the Sponsored Pre-job Training Programme which extends job-specific training to unemployed people aged between 16-30 years with a view to preparing them for employment in sectors such as construction, hotel and tourism and ICT.

 
Visit at the Belle Vue Experiment Station
12 July –The Minister of Agro Industry and Food Security accompanied by a team of officials from his Ministry effects a site visit at Belle Vue Experiment Station, Albion, to take stock of the research work undertaken by the Chinese Agricultural Technical Team.

11 July – The Prime Minister visits the Mauritius SSR International Airport Terminal Expansion Project – New Passenger Terminal construction site in Plaisance to take cognizance of the progress of work.

11 July – Opening of a one-day workshop and launching of activities in the context of World Population Day 2012 at Gold Crest Hotel, Quatre Bornes. The theme chosen this year is ‘Universal Access to Reproductive Health Services’.

11 July – Inauguration of four medium speed diesel generators turbines of 15 MW each at Fort Victoria Power Station at Bain des Dames, Cassis.

 
Training Workshop on Web 2.0
09 July – Launching of training workshops on the use of Web 2.0 tools in the agricultural and allied sectors at the R. Burrenchobay Lecture Theatre, University of Mauritius. The training workshop aims to help stakeholders better manage information, improve its dissemination and enhance collaboration among institutions.

06 July – The Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Finance and Economic Development, is conferred the African Finance Minister of the year 2012 Award by the African Leadership Magazine.

 
Droopnath Ramphul State College Receives PSEA 2011
06 July – Droopnath Ramphul State College wins the Public Service Excellence Award (PSEA) 2011 held at Le Meridien, Pointe aux Piments. Out of the thirty-three public service bodies which participated in the fifth edition of the competition, the College, situated at Calebasses has excelled in all criteria.

 
Press Conference: Access of Persons with Disabilities to Employment
05 July – Following the second reading of the Training and Employment of Disabled Persons (Amendment) Bill at the National Assembly, the Minister of Social Security, National Solidarity and Reform Institutions holds a press conference in Port Louis to expound the amendments being brought to the Bill.

 
Mauritius International Trade Expo (MAITEX)
05 July – In the context of the celebration of 40 years of manufacturing industry in Mauritius, Enterprise Mauritius organises a four-day Mauritius International Trade Expo (MAITEX) at the Swami Vivekananda International Convention Centre, Pailles. MAITEX is a comprehensive showcase of the savoir-faire of Mauritius in terms of manufactured and exported goods and serves as an international networking platform to promote Mauritius as a sourcing destination for quality products.

China Grants Rs 270 million to Mauritius for Development Projects
04 July – Signing of documents by the Vice Minister of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China, and the Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Finance and Economic Development, for a grant of around Rs 270 million to the Government of Mauritius for the implementation of several development projects.

 
India-Mauritius DTAA: India Agrees for Early Renegotiation
03 July – Indian authorities agree for an early renegotiation of the India-Mauritius Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) and consequently the Joint Working Group (JWG) will meet on 23 and 24 August 2012 in Mauritius.

 
International Conference on Pure and Applied Chemistry
02 July – The second edition of the International Conference on Pure and Applied Chemistry (ICPAC 2012) kicks off at the Hilton Resort and Spa, Flic en Flac. The four-day event, organised by the University of Mauritius, provides a platform to academicians and researchers to discuss, share ideas and keep abreast of the latest research findings in Chemistry.

02 July – A three-day workshop on ‘Prevention of Childhood Obesity’ is held at La Grande Cannelle, Domaine Les Pailles. The objective is to build capacity for a multisectorial team of Government officials and other stakeholders in the use and applications of a tool entitled “Prioritising areas for action in the field of population-based prevention of childhood obesity.”
