18 CCEM - Launching of Commonwealth Connects
31 August – One of the major outcomes of the 18th Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers (18 CCEM), held from 28 to 31 August at the Swami Vivekananda International Convention Centre, Pailles, is the launching of Commonwealth Connects, a workspace on-line platform for Commonwealth Education Ministers to share documents and collaborate on-line, and access resolutions and repertoire of research in education.
Gender-Based Violence Workshop at Flacq
30 August – The Ministry of Gender Equality, Child Development and Family Welfare organises a half-day workshop on Gender-Based Violence at the Isidore Rose Community Centre, Flacq, to sensitise the public on issues pertaining to domestic violence.
18 CCEM Youth Forum – Launching of the First Commonwealth Student Association
30 August – The Commonwealth Student Association, which will give student leaders greater opportunities and a greater voice across the Commonwealth in key education decisions, is launched during the closing of the four-day Youth Forum, at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute Auditorium, Moka.
Climate Change Adaptation Programme in the Coastal Zone of Mauritius
30 August – An Inception Workshop on Climate Change Adaptation Programme in the Coastal Zone of Mauritius, organised by the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, is held at Hennessy Park Hotel, Ebène. The Climate Change Adaptation Programme is financially supported by the Adaptation Fund Board which has been set up under the Kyoto Protocol of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
Floating Cages Handed Over to Grand Gaube Fishermen
30 August – Floating cages are handed over to fishermen in the context of the Pilot Cage Culture Project at sea at Grand Gaube. The floating cages costing Rs 300 000 are being offered freely to the fishermen of this pilot project.
Campaign against Counterfeit Medicines
29 August – The Ministry of Health and Quality of Life, in collaboration with the United States Embassy, launches a half-day workshop on Campaign against Counterfeit Medicines, at the Hennessy Park Hotel, Ebène. The authorities indicate their determination to raise awareness of the illicit manufacture and trade of counterfeit medicines in Mauritius.
Education - Opening of 18th CCEM
29 August – Opening by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy and Public of the 18th Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers (CCEM) Utilities at the Swami Vivekananda International Convention Centre, Pailles. The Conference provides an opportunity for Education Ministers of the Commonwealth to review progress towards achieving the Internationally Agreed Goals (IAGs), and reflect on emerging educational issues and challenges.
18th CCEM: Inauguration of Stakeholders’ Forum
28 August – The Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Finance and Economic Development inaugurates the Stakeholders’ Forum held in the context of 18th Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers (CCEM), at the Swami Vivekananda International Convention Centre, Pailles. The forum focuses on Education in the Commonwealth-Making it Happen.

28 August – Opening of the Commonwealth Teachers’ Forum by the Minister of Education and Human Resources at the Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre, Bell Village in the context of the 18th Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers (CCEM).
Police Security and Safety Week
28 August – In the context of the National Crime Awareness Campaigns, the Mauritius Police Force organises a Security and Safety Week at Plaza, Rose Hill. The programme includes a family day at Sir Gaëtan Duval stadium and a défilé by different units.
Workshop on Empowering Women and Youth through Co-operative Entrepreneurship
28 August – A one-day workshop on Empowering Women and Youth through Co-operative Entrepreneurship is held at the Pointe des Lascars Community Centre for unemployed women and youth of Panchavati and Pointe des Lascars villages. The aim is to share information relevant to the process of becoming an entrepreneur, and to foster the spirit of entrepreneurship among participants.

27 August – A four-day Youth Forum, a major international youth meeting under the theme Be the Change, opens at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute Auditorium, Moka in the context of the 18th Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers (18CCEM).
International Association of Prosecutors Conference
27 August – Some 175 local and foreign participants from the judiciary attend the 2nd regional conference of the International Association of Prosecutors (IAP) for Africa-Indian Ocean region. The conference is jointly organised by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and the IAP at Sofitel Imperial Hotel, Flic en Flac.
Commonwealth Post-Secondary and Higher Education Leaders' Forum
27 August – Opening of the Commonwealth Post-Secondary and Higher Education Leaders' Forum in the context of 18th Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers (18CCEM). The theme of the Forum is Meeting the Demand for Post Secondary Education: Practical Solutions to Difficult Questions.
Regional Training Course on Gamma Spectrometry
27 August – Some 16 African participants from 13 AFRA Member States attend a five-day regional training course on Gamma Spectrometry organised by the Mauritius Standards Bureau (MSB), and the Radiation Protection Authority at the MSB, Moka.
Gender, Women and Children Issues – Minister visits Rodrigues
26-29 August – The Minister of Gender Equality, Child Development and Family Welfare heads a delegation to Rodrigues for the launching of several workshops involving the Family Unit, the Gender Unit and the Child Development Unit of the Ministry as well as for the handing over of cheques to three NGOs under the Special Collaborative Programme for Support to Women and Children in Distress.
Youth/NYAA – Presentation of certificates
25 August – Presentation of certificates to 53 participants of a five-day Basic Fire Fighting Course at the Fire Station of Coromandel in the context of the National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA) programme.
25 August – Half-day workshop and presentation of certificates, at the Municipality of Port Louis, in the context of the programme Entrepreneuriat Jeunesse of the Ministry of Youth and Sports. The objective of the workshop is to provide knowledge and skills to the 60 participants in the setting up of their respective enterprises.
Sports Day for Police Officers
25 August – The Police Annual Athletics Meeting 2012 is held at the Maryse Justin Stadium, Réduit. Police officers from all divisions, branches participate in events such as long jump, high jump, triple jump, shot put, discus and javelin.

25 August – Half-day workshop on Gender-Based Violence at the Women Centre, Notre Dame, Montagne Longue. The aim is to create more awareness among the public on issues pertaining to domestic violence.

Public-Private Sector Meeting on Trade Issues
24 August – Public-private sector meeting in Port Louis, under the chairmanship of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, focuses on key trade issues. Discussions centre on: AGOA Third Country Fabric Provision; Rules of Origin for canned tuna in the context of the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA); Mauritius-Russia Memorandum of Understanding on Fisheries and Fisheries products; Export of Seafood to South Africa; and Implementation of the interim EPA and Strategy for a full EPA.

Youth Leaders Interactive Session with Minister
23 August – An interactive session between 25 Malagasy youth leaders and the Minister of Youth and Sports is held in Port Louis. The youth leaders are in Mauritius in the context of an eight-day study tour under the theme Education: Achievements and Challenges in Mauritius.
NYAA – Courtesy Call on Youth and Sports Minister
23 August – The Director, and the Regional Director for Africa of the NYAA Programme, International Award Secretariat, pay a courtesy call on the Minister of Youth and Sports in Port Louis. The NYAA Programme is licensed to the Ministry by the International Award Association and the operations of the Award in Mauritius are monitored by the International Award Secretariat in London.
Sports - Olympic Games
22 August – Meeting, in Vacoas Sports Complex, between the Minister of Youth and Sports and technical officers and heads of Sports Federations, following the participation of the Mauritian delegation in the London 2012 Olympic Games and in view of the forthcoming Games to be held in Rio in 2016.

22 August – The Ministry of Education and Human Resources, in collaboration with the British Council and the Mauritius Institute of Education, organises a workshop on School Leadership Programme for Rectors at the Mauritius Examination Syndicate, Réduit.
Mauritius-India Joint Working Group Meet
22 August – The three-day Mauritius-India Joint Working Group meeting on the Double Taxation Avoidance Convention opens in Port Louis. The Mauritian delegation is led by the Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, and the Indian side is headed by the Secretary, Economic Relations, Ministry of External Affairs.
UNFPA - Courtesy Call on Youth and Sports Minister
22 August – The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Country Director based in Madagascar pays a courtesy call on the Minister of Youth and Sports in Port Louis. The UNFPA has provided the technical and financial support to the Ministry in the field of youth sexual and reproductive health issues.

Laparoscopic Training Session
20 August – Around 20 local surgeons from the five Regional Hospitals attend a laparoscopic training session at the SSRN Hospital, Pamplemousses. The training is conducted by Prof Jean Michel Fabre, Head of Department of Digestive Surgery, Centre Hospitalier Regional Universitaire de Montpellier and Dr Pierre Blanc, Visceral Surgeon, St Etienne Hospital, France.
Sugar industry -Signing of Agreement between MSPA and other Stakeholders
17 August – The Mauritius Sugar Producers’ Association (MSPA), the Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment, the Joint Negotiating panel, and other recognised trade unions sign an agreement, in Port Louis, to start negotiations as from 1 January 2013 for the conclusion of a new collective agreement for sugar industry workers that will take effect as from 1 January 2014.
Technical Meeting on Migration Dialogue for Southern Africa
17 August – A three-day technical meeting on Migration Dialogue for Southern Africa (MIDSA) 2012 with focus on enhancing intra-regional labour mobility toward social and economic development in the SADC region opens at Intercontinental Hotel, Balaclava. The aim is to examine the roles and responsibilities of the various stakeholders to harness the development potential of labour mobility for the benefit of the people in the SADC region.

16 August – The Mahatma Gandhi Institute (MGI) in Nouvelle France hosts the Caravane de la Science during two days in line with the objective of the Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre to bring science and technology based activities within the reach of all segments of the population.

14 August – The Minister of Gender Equality, Child Development and Family Welfare proceeds to the inauguration of Cote d’Or Community Centre in the presence of the Minister of Social Integration and Economic Empowerment.
Press Conference – New Pension Fund Scheme for Local Government Employees
13 August – The Minister of Local Government and Outer Islands announces, at a press conference in Port Louis, that a new pension fund scheme for employees of local authorities will be created. Government has agreed to the State Insurance Company of Mauritius Ltd (SICOM) setting up a separate pension fund for each local authority in which the local authorities will be authorised to transfer their accumulated pension fund as at 31 August 2012.

13 August – Five-day training on Implementation Science and Operational Science for HIV Programming, organised by the National AIDS Secretariat, the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of Health and Quality of Life, is held at Gold Crest Hotel, Quatre Bornes.

13 August – The Minister of Gender Equality, Child Development and Family Welfare hands over cheques to the tune of Rs 3,242,001 to eight NGOs to fund approved projects under the Special Collaborative Programme for Women and Children in Distress.

Mauritius and Nigeria Sign DTAA
13 August – Mauritius and Nigeria sign a Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) at Le Maritim Hotel, Balaclava. The DTAA will give further spur to the positive evolution of economic ties between the two countries while making clear the taxing rights of Mauritius and Nigeria on all forms of income arising from cross-border economic activities.
NEF Hands Over Keys to 22 Families of Dubreuil
13 August – The National Empowerment Foundation (NEF) in collaboration with the Mauritius Housing Company hands over house keys to 22 families namely ex-squatters in the region of Dubreuil. The project is in line with Government's endeavour to provide assistance to low-income families who earn less than Rs 6 200 per month, and to provide support to the vulnerable families who have difficulties in meeting their housing needs.
International Youth Day
11 August – In the context of International Youth Day 2012, certificates are presented to 30 young people having completed the Youth Leadership Programme organised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and sports equipment are donated to 10 Youth Clubs of Petit Raffray.

Price Observatory - Cheapest Commodities in Grand Port District
10 August – The Price Observatory (PO), operating under the aegis of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Consumer Protection, publishes the findings of the fourteenth pricing exercise. The PO outlines that Grand Port, Pamplemousses and Rivière du Rempart are among the cheapest districts, while Moka, Savanne and Black River are among the most expensive. The districts of Plaines Wilhems, Flacq and Port Louis are in the middle group.

09 August – The Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre organises a Science Fun Day at Chemin Grenier Social Welfare Centre. WIFI Launched at Municipal Council of Quatre Bornes
02 August – Wireless Fidelity (WIFI) is launched at the Municipal Council of Quatre Bornes. The project consists of installing base transmission stations on local authorities’ premises to provide WIFI service enabling Mauritians have access to free internet connectivity.
Energy Efficiency Management Office’s Logo
01 August – Launching of the Energy Efficiency Management Office’s (EEMO) logo at the seat of the Office in Port Louis. The logo will be used on energy efficiency labels of EEMO for appliances, on certificates for buildings, as standards for vehicles as well as in training programmes, awareness campaigns and action plan.
New Community Health Centre in Trou aux Biches
01 August – The Prime Minister inaugurates the Trou aux Biches Community Health Centre which caters for some 3,000 people living in the regions of Trou aux Biches, Pointe aux Biches, Mon Choisy, Triolet Terminus and nearby localities. Basic health services, family planning clinic, antenatal and postnatal care as well as doctor consultation are available in the community health centre.
MRC Small Scale Research Grant Scheme
01 August – A half-day seminar on the evaluation of the daily lunch provided under the Eradication of Absolute Poverty Programme is held at Cybercity, Ebène. The event is an initiative of the Mauritius Research Council in the context of its small scale research grant scheme programme.
Indian Diaspora - Mini PBD in Mauritius
01 August – The Minister of Arts and Culture announces at a press briefing that Mauritius will host the 6th edition of the Mini Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) on 27-28 October 2012 at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute, Moka. A mini PBD is a regular annual conference held outside India as an overseas diaspora meeting.
